Why Gaiya Farm is The Perfect Place To Experience Strawberry Picking When You Visit Chiba

Mar 21, 2020

Have you ever want to experience the taste of fresh strawberries on your trip but you don’t know where to find them? And we’re not talking about supermarket fresh but off-the-tree fresh!

Sit back because we got you covered! The Gaiya Farm is one of the nearest Strawberry Picking farms you can find near Narita or Tokyo. Naturally, most strawberries farms have bad access as they’re located in a more secluded area. To access Gaiya Farm by public transport, all you need to do is to take a JR Train (Sotobo Line) and exit at JR Kamatori Station. Upon arrival take a 10min taxi ride (about 1,000 yen) and voila, you can start your strawberry picking!

One of the unique points about Gaiya Farm is although the strawberry picking season in Japan usually ends around the beginning of May, you can still enjoy the strawberry picking until the end of May at Gaiya Farm! But other than the strawberries you may also enjoy sweet potato harvesting and other vegetable and fruit picking when they’re in season. You can contact them on their Facebook to know more about the season!Upon entering you will be registering and you need to pay 2,000yen for all-you-can-eat strawberries! They will then pass you the plate with condensed milk because that’s how Japanese enjoys their strawberries

Now finally let’s talk about strawberries!Inside Gaiya’s strawberry farm they have 9 types of Japanese strawberries and some of them are famous in Chiba and some of them are very rare ones. You will not be confused about what’s what as even though they have a map (Japanese) but all their nameplates is in English *yay*. And don’t need to worry if it's your first time as the friendly staff will guide you one-by-one while teaching you about the strawberries. How amazing is that?

side note: if you’ve noticed the strawberry farm implemented and elevated strawberry farming. the owner told us it was because to allow disabled customers to enjoy strawberry picking too as usually strawberry picking you need to bend down and pick the strawberries. How thoughtful! The owner recommended us to try in this order to have the “full experience” and the gradual change of taste of each types. We’ve tried it and it was amazing!

1. Kaori- no (Sweet and sour fragrance but delicious and juicy)

2.Beni- Hoppe (a bright red strawberry with the perfect balance of sweetness and sourness and it doesn’t have holes inside)

3. Chiba-berry - new breed of berries! The size is big and red and sweet!

4. Yotsuboshi - one of the sweetest and juiciest strawberry of them all

5. White Princess - the rare white strawberries. Not many farm have this!

6. Akihime - smaller than normal strawberries but it’s sweet

.

7. Koiminori - sweet and not sour at all!

8. Sagahonoka - the biggest strawberries here! It’s really sweet and juicy

9. Yayoihime - ruby red strawberry with the right balance of sweetness and sourness

After you’re done strawberry picking you can head down to their cafe and enjoy their desserts such as homemade strawberry pizzas and strawberry pudding! The pudding tasted like pure strawberry and it has to be one of the most interesting puddings we’ve tasted!

Other than strawberry and fruits picking, you can also join in their many interesting workshops on the weekend such as cotton making workshops and make your own chopsticks. Definitely a worth-while experience!
