Have you heard of the word Teishoku before? 定食 (reads: teishoku) is a type of Japanese set meal, where all the dishes are served together in a set, that includes the main dish and rice, soup, and side dishes salad and pickles. In Japan, they serves this meal not only during lunch but breakfast and dinner as it is very fulfilling! Teishoku are usually served at local eateries and family restaurant in Japan, but unfortunately finding one in Malaysia is not as easy as finding in Japan. Which is why Japan’s famous Teishoku restaurant, Yayoi Japanese Teishoku Restaurant landed in Malaysia to serve you a good, authentic Teishoku meal!
Yayoi is one of our favorite restaurant as one bite of their teishoku meal will remind us to all the teishoku meals in Japan! What we love about Yayoi Malaysia is that although they are yet to be Halal certified, their food suppliers are from Halal suppliers and they do not serve pork in their premises making them a safe Muslim-friendly restaurant to dine in! It is located in 4 malls, LOT 10 Bukit Bintang, The Gardens, The Waterfront Desa Park City and the newest branch, IOI Putrajaya Mall.
The other reason why we love Yayoi is because their menu is customizable to your preference! Not many Japanese restaurants allows customization like changing their normal white rice to grain rice or mini chirashi, or you can even change your miso soup to clams miso soup. And if you can’t have enough of their rice and salad, its refillable so for the price you pay, you can eat their dishes with as much rice as you want.
But as a first timer, you might be confused on what to order but worry not as we are here to give our top 5 recommended dishes to order at Yayoi Japanese Teishoku Restaurant!

We recommend eating the chicken with the tartare sauce to have the perfect Chicken Namban taste!
2. Beef Nasumiso & Saba Shio Teishoku RM30.90
If you have a big appetite and looking for something more for your meal we highly recommend you the Beef Nasumiso & Saba Teishoku! Not only you will get a main dish of Beef Nasumiso(Beef and eggplant, cooked with Japanese Miso) but they also serves you grilled mackerel making it a perfect meal when you’re hungry! The Beef Nasumiso is really good and a very rare dish and not many Japanese restaurant serves this menu. Beef Nasumiso served with Japanese sesame
Saba Shio (Grilled Salt Mackarel) is so fresh and served with grated radish & lemon
3. Unagi Hitsumabushi RM42.90
Are you up to splurge for a special Japanese meal experience? We recommend you to try Unagi Histumabushi, especially if you’re an Unagi lover and misses Japan’s unagi. Hitsumabushi is a specialty dish from Nagoya where it consists of steamed rice, grilled eel with special sweet savoury sauce, assorted condiments and garnishes. The interesting part of this dish is that you can enjoy it in 3 ways!
1. Enjoy in original form, without adding any condiments to taste the amazing taste of unagi and it’s sauce.
2. Add spices to elevate the taste of the unagi
3. Take a portion of the rice and unagi, place it in a bowl. Pour Ochazuke Dashi to the portion. We recommend adding the wasabi and spices too
The grilled eel / unagi served is really fresh and will melt inside your mouth the moment you eat it and we had so much fun tasting it with 3 different style and each style have a different taste. We especially love the style with Ochazuke Dashi as not many restaurant serves Ochazuke in Malaysia and this reminded of us having a good ochazuke in Japan during winter!
4. Ebi-fry Roll RM20.90
If you have some space in your stomach after a good teishoku meal, we recommend you to try their signature roll, Ebi-fry Roll where the battered prawn are deep-fried and wrapped with sushi rice, egg and tobikko. The prawn is juicy and it is still crunchy and juicy even when wrapped by sushi rice.
5. Chicken Karaage RM18.90
The last dish we recommend you to try is Yayoi’s best seller dish, Chicken Karaage! You can choose to have them with teishoku set or even as a side dish! The Chicken Karaage gives a familiar taste of Karaage that we had in Japan as it has a few layer of flavour and it is still juicy even after deep-fried. The unique point of Yayoi Chicken Karaage is that they served with grated radish and homemade ponzu suace ( a sauce made with soy sauce and citrus juice), so eventhough it’s deep fried you won’t feel like it’s too oily and makes you feel like you can’t have enough of them!
